the party…

Our oldest turned 13 a while back and that kind of birthday deserves a celebration, so we are doing just that tonight. We can’t wait to celebrate this momentous birthday with all of Bess’ friends. Of course this also means that the boyfriend will be there. I am sure I will be posting pictures later. Happy Birthday Bess, we are proud of you!

Richard does the worm…

richard_catey.jpgThis past Sunday was the annual father daughter dance at Hutchison School. I was attending a volleyball tournament with Bess and thus was unable to attend much to my chagrin, however Uncle Richard made a suitable substitute in her mind. Catey was very proud that Richard could put on a show with his mad hip-hop moves for all the other Dads. I was informed with no uncertain terms that I would not have been very good at the limbo. Thanks Richard for stepping in for me.

Update: I found some pictures on Drew Renshaw’s Web site, though none of Richard and Catey - huh?

Extreme do well in pool play…

cajunland_vball_08_48.jpgBess is competing in a volleyball tournament this weekend in Shreveport, La, the Red River Classic. Yesterday was pool play to be flighted for the tournament. I could not have been more proud of the Metro girls. They played three matches and came out 3-0. They were down and against the wall on several occasions but fought through and came out on top. We saw some brilliant play from every girl on the team which is exciting to watch. I will say as a commentary however that we got all our monies worth out of this tournament. Every match went to three games and many of them went extra points. I definitely have more gray hair this morning than I did yesterday morning. Today we enter the bracket play and judging from results yesterday we have a pretty good spot in the bracket. Of course by making the gold bracket our first game does not happen until 3pm this afternoon. Great for Bess who wanted to sleep in but bad for Daddy who, if they do well, will not to drive out of Shreveport until about 7:30pm. I wish I could have slept later.

Pictures: Here are pictures from the first day’s competition.

LEHMAN-ROBERTS CO. IS FINALIST FOR NATIONAL
ECOLOGICAL AWARD FOR HOT-MIX ASPHALT PLANTS

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced today that Lehman-Roberts Co. of Memphis, Tenn., is a finalist for the prestigious 2007 Ecological Award for a new hot-mix asphalt (HMA) facility, sponsored by Roads & Bridges Magazine. The company received recognition at the Association’s 53rd Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz.

NAPA’s Ecological Award competition, which started in 1971, recognizes excellence in HMA facility operations. “NAPA selects the award recipients using rigorous criteria to evaluate the environmental friendliness of their operations,” says Mac Badgett, 2008 chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors. “The judges determined that Lehman-Roberts Co. operates in an exemplary manner.”

Lehman-Roberts Co. won the award for Plant #7 in Batesville, Miss. When its aggregate supply ran out at the site of its 32-year old wet wash plant, Lehman-Roberts wanted to build a new HMA facility a few miles away, on the same location as its new aggregate source. The company altered its plans because of neighborhood concerns, however, and ended up constructing a new facility on the site of its existing plant while that plant was still up and running at full capacity.

Using the existing location ultimately offered several advantages, says Patrick Nelson, Lehman-Roberts’ southern region manager. “Because of the aggregate processing that had taken place there previously, we had two large settling basins available to us for stormwater detention.” The grade of the site, coupled with the paving of stockpile areas and the plant site, helps keep the aggregate dry.

To limit the plant’s environmental impact, Lehman-Roberts used variable frequency drives on all of the large plant motors, which reduced power consumption and the amount of noise heard by the surrounding community. In addition, the new baghouse emits less than 1 percent of the particulates that the old plant was licensed for, resulting in a much cleaner environment.

Lehman-Roberts’ community involvement includes hosting a Career Fair Day in conjunction with the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Over 800 young people attended this year’s event.

Racers win the Championship

racers.jpgAfter winning the football league championship it was only fitting that David’s basketball team go on to win the league in basketball. We played without one of our best players who had the flu, so the boys had to all step up their games in order to pull out this win. Thus with only six players every boy had to contribute in a big way. They played great defense and attacked the goal at the right time. Late in the game our opponent the Bucks pulled within one point but after pulling them out of their tight zone we were able to get some easy buckets to clinch the victory. Congratulations to all the Racers, it was a great season.

Tornados in the mid-south…

251649194-M.jpgLast night we witnessed some of the worst weather to hit the Memphis area in many years. Not three miles from our house a Sears at the Hickory Ridge Mall was nearly destroyed. The reports today are saying that there were more than 40 deaths in the area. Union University in Jackson, Tn suffered some of the worst damage with nearly 80% of their student housing being damaged. Thank fully God protected them and their were no fatalities on the campus.

Memphis Stone and Gravel and Lehman-Robert Co. were not immune to the damages that were inflicted yesterday. Our North Plant was severely damaged. Nearly every field conveyor was turned over and many of the stackers and plant conveyors were damaged. The lab trailer is a wash and was completely destroyed. Thankfully no one was hurt but we will be several weeks getting it all back together.
