Call for a new ATM…

stop.jpg I came across this Web site yesterday as I was doing some reading about the forthcoming doom of the Highway Trust Fund (HTF). It is predicted that next year in 2009 the HTF will be in deficit by $3.9 billion. The National Asphalt Pavement Association has prepared a roadmap to help contracting communities be more proactive in their efforts to bolster the HTF. The bottom line is that next year our government will be out of money for major infrastructure improvements, crippling the maintenance program of an already overloaded system. The only way to fix this situation is to raise the user fee which has not been done since 1992 or to develop all new ways for the motoring public to pay for their use of the roadways. This is of course all happening while China and India are building highway infrastructures that will be larger than that of the U.S. If we are not careful we as a nation will lose our competitive edge in the world economy, which is our ability to move goods swiftly from one end of the country to the other.
