I am typically not a fiction reader. I enjoy it but find that when I do have time to read there is some measure of guilt for not working on the pile of business and theology books that are swiftly overtaking my desk. Thus, I make this reading recommendation out of confession that it is one of the most enjoyable reads that I have had in many years. At my wife’s urging I undertook reading The Shack. I was resistant but read the forward on a whim and was hooked. Twenty-four hours later I turned the last page and was amazed by the journey that had just taken place.
I won’t reveal the story, but suffice it to say that I considered William Young’s depiction of the Trinity to be one of the finest I have ever read. There is no personal theological disclaimer that is needed for the few that read my blog; they all know that I am simple in my understandings of the God’s Word. But the picture that is painted in this story was spot on as I understand the relationship of the Trinity to be. God has no gender; Jesus is still in his bodily form; there is no hierarchy to the Trinity; all truths out of God’s Word and all depicted beautifully in this book. Now this is not to say that I did not read the entire book without a few theological “hmmmm’s”, but on the whole I thought it was a good representation.
As I finished this book I realized that I had been on a journey. I put it down with a picture of the Trinity and the Godhead that I had never imagined. I am grateful for the place that William’s book has taken me. It is a great story of the redemptive work that Christ can do in the most wounded of men. Thanks to my wife for encouraging me to enter into this wonderful read.
I still say that it isn’t fiction. :0
