Second Pres. Files Permit For Expansion

Second Presbyterian Church has filed a $15.8 million permit application with the city-county Department of Construction Code Enforcement for a 73,000-square-foot expansion to the church and Presbyterian Day School, which operates on Second’s campus at 4052 Central Ave.

The two-year project will bring 42,000 square feet of additional space for the school, 23,000 square feet of additional space for the church and 8,000 square feet of additional shared space, said Harold Ware, executive administrator for the church.

“The school’s going to have a new signature entrance and it’s going to have more visibility off Poplar, so a lot of this is for the school,” Ware said. “The church is kind of tagging along, doing some things we’d like to do while the construction is going on.”

Plans call for a new early childhood center for PDS and the renovation of existing school buildings. The expansion will bring a new gymnasium, “lifestyles” room, music room and dining hall to the school, and PDS’ library will be renovated.

The project wasn’t designed to accommodate more students at the school, whose enrollment is about 620. Instead, Ware said, the goal is to update its aging infrastructure.

“We started PDS in 1952,” Ware said. “It really hadn’t had a major renovation since these buildings were built. This is the first time we’ve had an extensive renovation of the school.”

Also included in the construction is a recreation field on the west end of the campus and a few new parking spaces. Ware said traffic flow through the campus also will be improved.

Site work has begun on the project, with completion slated for fall of 2010. The Crump Firm Inc. is architect for the project, and Grinder, Taber & Grinder Inc. is the contractor.

The Shack…

theshack.png I am typically not a fiction reader. I enjoy it but find that when I do have time to read there is some measure of guilt for not working on the pile of business and theology books that are swiftly overtaking my desk. Thus, I make this reading recommendation out of confession that it is one of the most enjoyable reads that I have had in many years. At my wife’s urging I undertook reading The Shack. I was resistant but read the forward on a whim and was hooked. Twenty-four hours later I turned the last page and was amazed by the journey that had just taken place.
I won’t reveal the story, but suffice it to say that I considered William Young’s depiction of the Trinity to be one of the finest I have ever read. There is no personal theological disclaimer that is needed for the few that read my blog; they all know that I am simple in my understandings of the God’s Word. But the picture that is painted in this story was spot on as I understand the relationship of the Trinity to be. God has no gender; Jesus is still in his bodily form; there is no hierarchy to the Trinity; all truths out of God’s Word and all depicted beautifully in this book. Now this is not to say that I did not read the entire book without a few theological “hmmmm’s”, but on the whole I thought it was a good representation.
As I finished this book I realized that I had been on a journey. I put it down with a picture of the Trinity and the Godhead that I had never imagined. I am grateful for the place that William’s book has taken me. It is a great story of the redemptive work that Christ can do in the most wounded of men. Thanks to my wife for encouraging me to enter into this wonderful read.

Ken Bennett on Fox News Tonight…

DSC03413.jpgTonight Fox News in Memphis will do a feature story on Ken Bennett, the director of Streets Ministries in Memphis, Tn. The interview will feature testimonials from Andre Allen and John Calipari, head coach of the Memphis Tigers and number 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Take some time out tonight or TIVO the newscast at 9pm, it will be exciting to see this servant of God celebrated in the media.

Ken began streets over 20 years ago with a van and a basketball in the Claiborne Foote Housing project in the inner city of Memphis. Since that time Streets has come to occupy a multi-thousand square foot facility on Vance Ave. were hundreds of kids come everyday to be tutored, play basketball, and hear the Gospel presented. The impact that Streets and Ken have had on the city of Memphis is impossible to measure and can only be told by talking to one kid at a time; the same way Ken did it.

City of Memphis Begins Construction

construction_update.png

This Monday the City of Memphis will begin their drainage improvements to the 2pc campus. I have to admit that this will be the most disruptive part of this entire construction campaign. Beginning next week the existing west drive off of Central Avenue will be closed and traffic will have to come into campus from Central through the old CPC driveway just east of there. Traffic will flow across the old bridge in the old CPC parking lot and a new temporary drive will connect traffic to the existing driveway and the new CPC parking lot.

The City of Memphis is doing these drainage improvements to relieve flooding problems on the South side of Central Ave. The church and school will benefit through the use of a new soccer field that the city will construct. Additionally, it will relocate the current drainage on campus making way for the new F Building which will break ground in the coming months.

We understand that this is a huge disruption for the entire campus including the CPC and PDS. We will make every effort to make this as painless as possible and will work hard to keep you informed as to changes to any planning. We will be posting updates on the new web site that launched this week, www.2pc.org. The map that is below is available in larger form here.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and prayers during this amazing season of our life together at 2PC.
