Will it blend?

Will it Blend - iPhoneIn one of the best examples of viral marketing I have seen, Blendtech has taken on the task of blending an iPhone. The “Will it Blend” videos produce heart racing anxiety as they go about disintegrating everyday products. My favorite may be the crowbar. But in this latest video, Blendtech spokesperson Tom Dickson purees a brand new iPhone. Watching the video is a mixture of, “surely he is not going to… no! please don’t do that. Oh he really did it. Oh, wow that was really cool - huh, iSmoke?”

David Pogue’s new musical…

There is a hardly a day that goes by that I don’t take some time out to read David Pogue’s NYT’s blog. I find David to be highly entertaining and knowledgeable about his subject. But possibly some of the best stuff that David does are his song spoofs about technology. His latest is a video musical he did about the latest gadget from Apple. (I won’t mention it by name due to my previous promises). This video is well worth your time and very funny.

Last iPhone post, I promise…

I said I was not going to post anything on the iPhone but here I am with number 3. However, I could not resist this post as it proves the engineering capabilities of Apple Inc. pcworld in this post demonstrates the hardiness of the iPhone by scratching it with keys and dropping it on concrete. The tests were pretty brutal and the results were amazing.

iPhone

iPhoneYes, now I am in the millions that have posted blogs on the day of the release. I have read blogs that range from Woz and the Mayor of Philadelphia waiting in line for their phones. There is a weird rumor that AT&T has boosted the speed on their EDGE network. I have seen pictures of lines and people missing a day of work all over a phone. So what does this say about our culture today? Technology is VERY important to us. We have become a generation and a culture that not only loves, but depends on our technology. Apple and the iPhone will change the course of history with this device, or so we are being told, I wonder if that can be true? How can a device such as this really change our world, I guess we will find out. So for just today, Happy iPhone Day!.

OS X - how to build Apache2 and PHP5 on your mac…

This entry is not for the technologically faint of heart, which leaves out a large portion of my family and I am really showing off my geek with this entry, however, this took so much energy to accomplish that I feel the need to share it. I have been for nearly three days attempting to install Apache2 and PHP5 on my MacBook Pro. This was a task that I assumed would not be too daunting but nonetheless proved to be. All of the directions that I found make it look easy but I ran into plenty of traps along the way.

I initially started on Marc Liyanage’s page and was going to download the already built packages, but after some reading I decided that I would build the packages myself. I did ultimately use his MySQL build, however.

I did a few searches and did not come up with much but did find the following links:

1. PHPmac (very helpful!)
2. semanticpool
3. a random blog (like mine)
4. Max OSX Hints
5. laughingmeme (more helpful…)

I used part of each of these articles but ultimately what resolved my issue was a workaround on my own (can you feel the pride?). After following the instructions from article one above I was getting an error when trying to start apache. It was telling me that php5 could not find a library that it needed in mysql. When I followed the path there was an extra directory in the path. I went back and looked at my configuration and I can not figure out why the extra tree was in the path but it was. I don’t know of a good .so editor for the mac and thus I created a link to the correct path.

sudo ln -s /usr/local/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.15.dylib /usr/local/mysql/lib/mysql/

By creating the alias for where the .so file thought the library was supposed to be to where it actually was I was able to get apache to start.

Let the programming begin…
