…sad but true

If you had purchased $1,000 of AIG stock one year ago, you would have $42 left.

With Lehman, you would have $6.60 left.

With Fannie or Freddie, you would have less than $5 left.

But if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have had $214.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

the BGE table…

bge_table_08_5.jpg For my birthday a few months ago Catherine bought me a big green egg. I am sure that there were no ulterior motives, but I do seem to be cooking more these days. But that is just fine with me, I love it! Ever since getting one however, I have really wanted to build a table for it similar to the one that you can buy in the store for the BGE, however I was not willing to depart with $600 for a simple table. Thus the Fall BGE project began. After a little research online I found this stud who had not only built his own but taken the time to put together some very detailed construction plans. I think I will leave off all the bottle openers however. With plans in hand I went to see my good friend Posey at Old City Millwork who is actually talented at these things. David, Posey, and I had a wonderful afternoon cutting, planing, and not following the instructions, which we found out was important toward the end of the day. Thus, after a couple of more hours next Saturday we will be done. My huge thanks to Posey for the use of his talent and great tools. I was most fascinated by the chop saw that you punched in the dimensions of the piece you were cutting and the fence automatically moved to the correct position; within 1000th of an inch. Totally cool! I can’t wait to post the finished pics. But here are the ones from construction.

Thanks again Posey!

Hutch takes the River City Classic

Hutchison puts hurt on volleyball tourney field
Hutchison goes unbeaten to title

When asked to rate how well her team was playing Saturday following its Gold Bracket championship victory over Collierville in the River City Classic at Bartlett, Hutchison volleyball coach Jitka Okolicany responded with, “An eight,” out of 10.

Apparently, there’s still more room for improvement for a Sting squad that capped an undefeated run through this weekend’s River City Classic on Saturday with its 25-15, 25-21 title-match victory over Collierville.

“We’re not all the way there yet,” Hutchison senior hitter Rebekah Smith said. “There’s a few kinks to work out.”

Smith, whose No. 1-ranked Sting squad was taking on a Collierville team ranked No. 2 by The Commercial Appeal, contributed a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs, helping take the air out of a Lady Dragon bunch that, like Hutchison, had gone undefeated through pool play.

“They’re a great team … and teams always step it up when they play against us,” said Sting senior middle Meg Stephenson, who added six kills and three digs.

Hutchison (18-10) took command midway through Game 1, as standout setter Caroline Sabbatini’s back-to-back aces helped the Sting build a 15-11 lead after the game had been tied at 11-all.

Collierville (25-7), led Saturday by setter Meghan Gass’ five kills and nine assists, was outscored 10-4 the rest of the way, allowing Hutchison to carry its momentum into Game 2.

“The effort was there. It was just a momentum and tempo factor,” Collierville coach Lisa Lewis said. “Everybody in the Gold Bracket had one big hitter, and once you get past that, it’s a defensive game.

“That’s what everybody is going to have to sharpen on, is our defense, to get to the state (tournament) level.”

Lewis’ Lady Dragons didn’t back down in Game 2, tying the match at 17-17 on a net violation by Hutchison.

But the Sting responded by scoring three of the next four points to take a 20-18 lead before Smith put Collierville away with three more kills down the stretch.

Sabbatini finished with a match-high 27 assists, three aces and eight digs for Hutchison, which had knocked off tournament-host Bartlett in the Gold Bracket semifinals.

Crockett County beat Arlington, 25-16, 25-20, to capture the tourney’s Bronze Bracket championship, while Jackson Liberty rallied to beat St. Agnes, 15-25, 25-12, 15-11 to earn the Silver Bracket title.
